Chapter 13 – What Would You Do

Well, I have different ideas of which direction this story is going to go, but not quite sure which one I’ll pick. I suppose we will find out together as the story goes on. The way I write is to let the story flow out of me. I’ll get ideas for where it should go, but I don’t force those ideas into the story. It has to flow. So, with that, let’s see what flows out of me in Chapter 13.

Chapter 13

Frank hung up the phone after talking with William Steel. Running a tired hand over is face, he could only shake his head. Edward Shaw was back for revenge it seemed. Frank was former military. He never shared who he served with, but many people guessed that he was a Navy Seal. Frank also refused to say why he left. Mr. Steel didn’t ask, he just wanted someone who he could send on special missions. Frank was that guy. The police could never do anything about certain enemies to the Steel family. Frank could. He had been trained to kill people, and he was really good at his job. This one, however, was going to be tough. He remembered Edward Shaw, and his threat.

What Would You Do

Frank and William looked up as Edward Shaw burst into the office. His appearance was more dishevelled than it had been in the entire two weeks his son had been missing. Edward’s dark eyes were red from crying. William sighed.

“I’ve told you too many times already. I’m not giving you money to give criminals.” Edward stopped short of the duo and pointed an accusing finger at William.

“The police found my son. He’s dead! And it’s all your fault!” He screamed out the words, his voice raspy. Frank’s hand slowly drifted to the glock on his hip. In his grieving state, Edward Shaw could very well be a dangerous person. William shook his head.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t see how this is my fault. Now, you may take some time off to grieve your loss. I’ll be generous and you can have a month. But after that I need you back.” Edward stared at him, lost for words.

“I will never work for you again! You’ll pay for what you did. That’s a promise!” He spun around almost running over a young boy as the boy darted into the room, followed by an exhausted looking Amanda. The little boy looked up at Edward, saw the tears in his eyes and reached into his pocket, pulling out a lollipop. He looked at the beloved candy and then held it up as an offering to Edward.

“Davis, come here. Get away from that man.” Frank stood up, but all the rage seemed to have evaporated from Shaw. He took the offered candy and walked out of the office, looking back once as Davis ran to William.

“Daddy! I went swimming today.”

Chapter 13

Frank shook his head, coming back from the memory. It had been the look on Shaw’s face when he looked back as Davis spoke to his father. That look had caused Frank to excuse himself and make sure that the grieving father did indeed leave the property. He even radioed one of the security teams and told them to follow him. Mr. Steel had waved away his warning as he returned.

“He will do something to your son. I saw it in his eyes.” William and Amanda had disagreed. Davis had been four years old when that happened. Now, twelve years later, Shaw had come to collect. As Frank’s team filed into the room to join him at the table he found himself wondering if Shaw would kill Davis – the little boy who had offered him his beloved lollipop because he had seen the man crying. He looked around at his team, all of them former military and great at their jobs. They would not let Shaw kill the boy!

What Would You Do

Davis sat in the corner of the bedroom. He thought back to the video, where the man had gone on about how Davis was alive and as long as the Steel family did what they were told, he would stay that way. They were not to contact the police and to await further instructions. After that, Davis had been escorted back up to his room, his hands were freed and the door locked behind him. On the bed was a tray with two sandwiches, an apple and a can of root beer. The teen had ignored his growling stomach and gone to the corner where he now sat, burying his head in his knees and crying till the tears dried up. He was going to die because his parents had not helped pay a ransom for one of their employees to get his son back.

Hours went by and the room was dark by the time Davis got up. He couldn’t ignore his growling stomach anymore. Crossing the room, he felt along the wall till his hand found the light switch, turning it on and bathing the dreary room in light. The soda was warm, but he didn’t care. As he sat on the bed he thought back to the last thing the man had said to him before he was taken out of the room.

“I don’t want to kill you. You were the only good one back then.” What had he meant? Davis had searched his memories, trying to find the one with this man. The memory just eluded him. Or perhaps it was too long ago for him to remember. As he ate his food he thought back to his new friends. Did they know something was wrong? Or did they just think he was too busy? Then he thought about the other stranger. What role did he play in all of this? Was he involved, or had this man just taken him before the stranger from the mall and the diner could?

Chapter 13

Adrian Bentley put his cell phone down, rubbing his temples as his headache seemed to get worse with the news. Davis Steel had been abducted by some unknown party. Well that was just great.

“Do you need anything else Adrian?” He didn’t even look up as his secretary popped her head in the door. Shaking his head, he opened a drawer to look for an Advil. She smiled and came into the office anyway, pouring him a glass of water from his drink station. As she placed the water on the desk, she opened the top drawer on his left and pulled out the bottle of Advil, shaking two out and handing them to him. “Really? I wish you would get those headaches checked out.” Tossing the pills into his mouth, he swallowed them and drank the entire glass of water.

“It’s just stress, Miranda. Nothing more. Go home. I’ll see you in the morning.” She nodded, though he could tell she wasn’t done with him. As she left another woman walked in, not bothering to knock. Crossing the room, she settled into one of the chairs across the desk from him, raising an eyebrow.

“You look like shit, Adrian. We’ll find the kid. Martin and his people are good at their jobs.” He shot a look at her.

“If they were good at their jobs, the boy wouldn’t have been taken in the first place. Surely by now the Steel family has asked their attack dogs to find him as well. We need to find Davis first, do you understand?” She popped her bubble gum, her green eyes rolling. “Enough of the attitude, Jennifer. If anything happens to the boy, you’re the one who will answer for it. Charles was your guy, not mine.” The bubble gum popped again.

“Easy big brother. You’re not the only one who has powerful allies. Remember that.”

Who are These People?

Well, the plot thickens. Who will find Davis first? Frank or Martin? What does the Bentley family want with Davis? Will Edward Shaw really kill Davis, or will he have compassion because of the act of kindness twelve years ago? I guess we will have to wait and see what happens. Have a great weekend everyone.
