Run – Chapter 14

person running on dirt road

I’m so sorry you guys. I honestly forgot that it was Saturday for most of the day. Plus, I had to work this morning. The shift was long and involved me running around a lot, so I had to sit in the hot tub to rest my aching body after. But, enough about that and let’s get into Chapter 14, Run.

Run

“Mom, is that really you?” Adam heard his mother sob, followed by a scuffle and then his dad’s voice came over the phone.

“Adam. Thank goodness you’re okay. Your mother and I got home and saw the place looked like someone had tossed it. Where are you?” Adam frowned. He had left the place tidy. Who went to his house after he left? And why?

“I’m at my friend Avery’s place. When both of you vanished and a body that looked almost like mom showed up, the cops didn’t want me to be on my own. Where have you two been? What’s going on?” Silence followed his questions. “Stop dodging my questions dad! Someone called Avery and threatened her and me. I deserve some answers.” His parents sighed and he realised that they must have been on speaker phone.

“You should not have involved other people. What’s the address? We will come get you and bring you somewhere safe. Then, and only then, will you get your answers.” Now it was Adam’s turn to go silent. The strange caller had told him not to trust his parents, and there was a part of him that didn’t. “Adam?” He sighed and gave them the address. “We will run right over. Be ready to leave.”

Adam silently closed the door behind him, making sure that it locked. He had left a note on the fridge to let Avery and her parents know that his parents had called and came to pick him up. As he turned to the street, he suddenly felt uneasy. There was a car parked across the street. He couldn’t tell if it was his imagination, but it looked like someone was sitting in it. Staying with his back to the door, Adam kept an eye on the car. If there was someone in the car and they came after him, he fully intended to bang on the door and make a fuss to get Avery’s parents attention.

His parents truck came into view and pulled up along the edge of the driveway. Adam quickly ran to the truck, climbing in beside his mom. She hugged him as Daniel started to drive away.

“I’m so glad you’re okay.” Nancy looked closer and noticed the bruises on his face from his beating by Tyler. “Who did that to you?”

“A bully from school. It’s not a big deal. Now, can you two please tell me what’s going on?” He noticed his dad constantly looking in his rear view mirror and turned to look behind them. The car was following them. “Dad?”

“Don’t worry. We will out run them as soon as we get out of town.” Adam looked at his father, before continuing to watch the car behind them. “Nancy, can you see who it is?” She looked back momentarily before shaking her head.

“No, it’s too dark. Let’s just get Adam to safety.” Adam turned to his parents.

“I want answers!” Nancy turned to her son, patting his hand.

“As soon as you’re safe.”

The man cursed as they exited the town limits and the truck took off down the highway. Knowing Daniel, that truck had a powerful engine. As he pressed the gas pedal to the floor, he turned on his Bluetooth.

“Call Mick.” The phone rang four times before Mick answered.

“Drew, do you have any idea what time it is?” Drew ignored the annoyance in his voice.

“They took Adam, and they just left town. I can’t keep up. Their truck will outrun me.” Mick swore.

“What direction are they heading?”

“South.”

“Fine. I’ll see if I can intercept them. Just stay on their tail as much as you can. We have to get Adam back!”

Avery burst into her parents room, causing her mom to reach for her gun. After realising that the threat was only her daughter, she relaxed.

“Avery, what’s the meaning of this? It’s not like you to run into our room like this.” Avery waved the paper at them.

“Adam’s parents came and got him. I happened to look out the window and see him get in the truck, but a car that was parked across the street began to follow them. What should we do?” Avery’s mother got out of bed, grabbing a sweatshirt to throw over her tank top.

“We call the police, that’s what we do. Did you see who was driving?” Avery followed her mother downstairs.

“No, it was too dark. Mom, I’m scared.” Her mother grabbed her phone and punched in Detective Roberts phone number.

“It will be alright. Detective Roberts will know what to do.”

“Dad look out!” A deer bolted onto the road, freezing at the sight of the oncoming truck. Daniel turned the wheel, the truck hit a bump and flipped. The three braced as the truck rolled into the ditch before slamming into a tree. Groaning, Adam managed to kick the door open and crawl out. Dizziness and nausea hit him as he tried to stand up. Groaning, he sat back down and leaned against the tree.

“Mom? Dad?” It was too dark to see much, but Adam was sure that his parents were unconscious. Headlights approached the accident, stopping on the side of the road. Fear gripped Adam as the driver got out of the car and ran over.

“Are you okay?” The man rushed over to his side and Adam looked back to his parents. The stranger looked over and pulled a cell phone from his jacket pocket. “Hello? I would like to report an accident.” He described where they were before hanging up. Adam frowned. The stranger only mentioned his parents. Struggling to his feet, Adam took a shaky step away from the man. He stood up and easily caught Adam, steadying him.

“Who are you?” Throwing one of Adam’s arms over his shoulder, he wrapped a strong arm around Adam’s waist, taking his weight as they headed to the car. “Mom! Dad!”

“Adam, don’t be afraid. I’m here to protect you. Your parents are not who you think they are. If you would have gone with them, it would have meant death.” Adam glanced back at the truck.

“What do you mean? Who are you?”

Run From Who?

Okay, do I have your attention yet? I almost ended the chapter before the accident, but figured I needed to have that in this chapter. I have heard from some that the chapters are just too short. Sorry about that. Well, that is it for today, so I hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend and I’ll catch you on Monday.
