Hotel Stress

Well, today is one of those days where my plan is to write stuff down and see what comes out. I’ll be honest; I’m tired. Night shifts are not exactly fun and not getting the sleep I need doesn’t help. On top of that, because we are losing a night shift staff at the hotel, I’m not sure how much sleep I’ll be getting for the next while. So, seeing as we seem to be going down this path, let me share some of my hotel stress right now.

Scheduling

One of the hardest things to do at a hotel, when business is a tad slower, is scheduling people. With the cost of everything right now, everyone needs their hours to pay the bills. When we don’t have enough to go around, that’s typically when people start looking for other work, which causes stress for management. To be clear, this is not why we are losing one of the night shift staff. She is moving away. And let’s be honest, finding someone to only work 3 nights a week is not easy. Thankfully, most of the staff are very understanding, but if things don’t change, we could be in trouble.

Advertising

The best way to fill up the hotel is to advertise the hotel. Anyone who has had to advertise knows that advertising costs money. It’s kind of a vicious cycle. You need to advertise to get business to get money, but you need money to advertise so that you can get more business and get more money. You see what I mean. One of the things that is a part of my job description is handling social media. Trying to put content out regularly enough to hopefully grow our following is tricky. And one of the ways I have found the best for growing our following is by doing giveaways. Again, we kind of need money for that. Hopefully the event we are doing November 24-26 will help.

My Schedule

Yes, I am living at the hotel and some of my night shifts go to paying my “rent”. This essentially means I live here for free, but my 3 night shifts I don’t get paid for, unless I do extra work. This now means that I am losing hours, unless I partner those night shifts with other shifts. Sure, I don’t have to pay certain things anymore, but I still need my paychecks to be high enough in order to make a dent in my debt. This is tricky, because I still need sleep in order to function. So, I am still working on eliminating that hotel stress from my list.

Managing a Hotel is stressful

Don’t get me wrong. There are plenty of aspects of the job that I love. If there wasn’t, I would be looking for a new job. I love my coworkers. You will not find a more loving and supportive group of people anywhere. I love that I get to meet new and interesting people. Some do cause more stress, but then you get those guests who just make you laugh. Being honest again, the best are the ones who see how hard you work and give you a tip to make your day better. I love that I have a boss who goes above and beyond to help me when I’m in need. It’s no wonder she was my first call when I needed to go to the ER because I was in extreme pain. Kidney stones suck. I do not recommend getting them. So, yes, the job is stressful, but I am thankful for it. I need to believe we can get busier. Anything can happen if we try.
