Pursue – Chapter 20

Welcome back to another chapter. Chapter 20, Pursue, should be an exciting one. I really hope you guys are enjoying reading this novel as much as I’m enjoying writing it. Well, let’s keep this short and sweet and now it’s time to dive into our story.

Pursue

Adam sat silently in the back of the car, between Mick and the woman who had entered with Drew. He was in shock and everything that had happened after Drew informed them that Elijah was in town was a blur. Not even having time to register the thought that his father had killed the one mother he had known, after finding out he had ordered his actual mother killed, Adam had been dragged out of the house, tossed in the back of the car, and after throwing some supplies in the trunk, they had sped away from the Burma’s house. Then it hit him and he looked at Mick.

“Will my grandparents be okay?” Mick nodded.

“Elijah will want to pursue us because we have you. Besides, your grandparents are smart. They will go to one of the safe houses to be safe.” Adam stared at his hands in his lap. This was all happening because of him.

“We should head out of state and get Adam as far away as possible. Elijah can’t have a chance to capture him.” Looking over, Adam was reminded that he was never introduced to the woman next to him. She saw his confused look and her face softened. “Sorry, in all the chaos I never got a chance to introduce myself. My name is Valerie. Sarah was my younger sister!”

Avery’s mother walked into her daughter’s room, gently knocking on the door as she did.

“Avery, you should eat something. It’s been two days.” Avery, who was sitting on her floor leaning up against her bed, looked up at her mom. Her hair was greasy and tossed in a messy ponytail, her eyes were red from crying and there were dark circles under her eyes from a lack of sleep. Ever since Adam had left the house, the teen had been a wreck as bad news seemed to be the only news. They knew that Adam and his parents had been in a car accident, and that Adam had disappeared from the wreck. Now, just that morning, they had been informed that Adam’s mother had been murdered. The police had called in federal agents for assistance. The whole case was taking a toll on everyone involved.

“How can I eat when I have no idea what happened to Adam? I keep thinking back to that night when he left. Maybe if I had done something differently -” A fresh wave of tears cut off her conversation and her mom sat beside her, pulling her daughter into a hug.

“The police and federal agents will pursue this until they get to the truth. Until then, we need to believe that Adam is okay.” Avery looked up at her mom.

“How? Everything is falling apart, and now his mom has been murdered. Why would someone murder her?”

Detective Richards looked through the one way glass at Daniel Ness. Filled with grief, he had told the detectives everything and it was a lot to take in. He had killed Adam’s birth mother under the instruction of a man named Elijah. They were to bring Adam to Elijah, who was Adam’s real father. Elijah was the leader of a criminal organisation, one that the feds were very interested in taking down. Trafficking, prostitution rings, murder for hire, and rape were only a few of his offences. However, Daniel and Nancy had taken one look at baby Adam and knew they couldn’t give him to Elijah, so they had run and started working with a rival crime boss. They knew Elijah would pursue them, so they moved around constantly, helping their new boss expand his empire.

“Not exactly the case we thought we took, is it?” He turned to see Detective Mathers standing in the doorway, a cup of coffee in her hands. “You look like you need this more than I do.” She handed her cup to him, which he accepted gratefully.

“This just seems all unreal. Crime bosses, secret organisations, and one poor kid with a messed up past that he doesn’t even know about. We need to find him, now more than ever.” She nodded and looked at Daniel through the window.

“Does he think Elijah has Adam?”

“No. He said that Elijah would not continue to pursue them himself if he had Adam. Apparently he has hit men for that. No, Mr. Ness believes the people who were hunting them in order to save Adam from them have him. However, if the good guys have him, why won’t they let the authorities know?”

Pursue or be Pursued

Wow. This was a lot to take in. Too bad this is the first chapter of the day. I would love to leave you hanging with all of this to digest it. However, a second chapter is coming right now, so I’ll let you get to it. Enjoy.
