Friend or Foe- Chapter 27

Well, here we are with chapter 27 of our book. I think I’ll be wrapping it up soon but not sure how. Should I make it a series, or just a stand alone? It’s weird, with my fantasy novel that I’m writing the question isn’t if it will be a series or not, but how long to make each book. Mystery thriller novels are completely new to me. I’ve never tried to write one so I’m not sure where to draw the line between telling a story and dragging it out too long. Let me know what you think in the comments below. For now, let’s enjoy Chapter 27 – Friend or Foe?

Friend or Foe

Detective Richards and Drew exchanged knowing grins. The two had been colleagues for a long time, but no one knew about it. Well, almost no one. The two pulled the teen to his feet, helping him to the car. As Adam climbed into the back seat he saw Detective Mathers in the driver seat. She smiled at his shocked expression.

“Surprise! I know you have a lot of questions for us, but let’s get you somewhere safe first. Does that sound like a good plan to you?” Adam could only nod, his voice seemingly gone. Drew slid in the back next to him and Detective Richards climbed into the passenger seat. Odette Mathers put the car into drive and slowly started down the dark road. Adam could feel his head spinning, and not just because of the pain. What was going on? It was becoming more difficult to figure out who was a friend and who was a foe.

Wallace Vanderboon dismissed the two agents he had left to watch over Valerie. They couldn’t tell him how long she had been missing, or what direction she had gone in. Why would Valerie run? Could he have been wrong about Drew? Shaking his head he looked around the room that Valerie had been in. She would have left some clue as to where she was going, and she would have left one only he could find. After all, he had trained her that way. Somewhere in this room was the answer. Now, he just had to find it.

The group drove in silence, Drew glancing over and seeing that Adam had passed out. He managed a smile. The poor kid has been through a lot. Odette turned down a side road that was overgrown. You might miss it unless you were specifically looking for it. The road twisted and curved a lot before coming to a bridge. She stopped before the bridge, frowning as she looked at the run down wooden bridge.

“This bridge has seen better days. Do you think it will hold us?” Allan Richards got out of the car and examined the bridge more closely before climbing back in.

“It should hold, unless the car is heavier than I think it is.” Rolling her eyes, the detective inched the car forward, slowly beginning the crossing. The water was calm at least if things went sideways, and the bridge wasn’t very long. Hopefully any pursuers would feel less bold about crossing the bridge if they found the road. Everyone seemed to be holding their breath till, at last, they heard the car come into contact with gravel again. Sighing with relief, she sped the car up again.

“I’m glad we don’t have to cross that rickety thing again. How much further Drew?” Glancing at the GPS on his phone, Drew smiled.

“It should be right up ahead, around the next bend. Look for 15832.” As they rounded the bend, the two detectives quickly spotted the house marker and turned into the driveway. Drew leaned back, feeling the exhaustion threatening to take over him as well. Keeping this kid safe was not an easy task.

Valerie pulled up to a rundown warehouse. It was dark and looked abandoned. Double checking the address on her phone, she got out and grabbed her gun, checking that it was loaded. She wasn’t sure who was waiting inside for her. Were they friend or foe? Slowly she entered the building, wishing she had grabbed a flashlight. It was dark inside and she could barely make out the interior by the moonlight shining through the skylight.

“Hello?” The room flooded with light and she quickly shielded her eyes, blinking repeatedly to try and get used to the sudden change. She felt someone grab her gun hand and twist it painfully behind her back, causing her grip to break on it. Her attacker had her on her knees, and her gun was taken away before she could react. Mentally cursing herself she looked up. Elijah walked over, a smile on his face.

“Hello Valerie. It’s been a long time.”

Who is our friend or foe?

Oh no. Valerie seems to be in a bit of a situation here. And who would have thought that Drew was working with Detective Richards and Detective Mathers. What does this mean for Adam? Are they all his friends or his foes? Who do we trust? More answers to come, hopefully, next week. And please, leave me a comment and let me know what you would like. Do we make this a series or stand alone? Do you feel it’s too drawn out, or just suspenseful enough to make it enjoyable?
