Chapter 1 – What Would You Do?

city near mountain during golden hour

Okay, I have decided that I will try and tackle another book. However, this one will not be a mystery. I’m going to attempt a drama style novel. I know, this isn’t my usual wheelhouse when it comes to writing, but let’s see what happens. The title of this novel is What Would You Do and I’ll put the chapters next to it instead of naming all the chapters. That actually is quite difficult, so let’s see how it goes. Here is “What Would You Do” Chapter 1.

Chapter 1

Davis Steel looked out the window as the town car drove out of the city and into one of the rich neighbourhoods of LA. Most people would expect the sixteen year old boy’s brown eyes to be wide at the appearance of the large, and very expensive, houses. Each house seemed to have many large windows, neatly manicured lawns, and fences around with security gates. He even spotted a few security cameras and thought he heard a dog bark. It wouldn’t surprise him if some of these homes had guard dogs. They looked like a thief’s dream location for expensive things.

Davis wasn’t impressed though. Not by the houses, the model looking people walking the streets, or even the fact that the car he was in was now pulling into a driveway of one of these houses. The driveway wound up a hill where a large, white house stood. Most of the windows on the main floor were floor to ceiling, with a large front porch. The lawns were neatly mowed, the hedges trimmed, and the flowers bright. As the car stopped in front of the house, Davis opened the door, the gentle breeze playing with his brown, curly hair. He ran a hand through it, noting that it needed a trim. The front door opened and a tall woman, around five foot nine, taller in her heels, came to greet him.

Chapter 1

“Davis, you made it. Welcome to our new home. What do you think?” Davis let his mom hug him, wrapping one arm halfheartedly around her, holding his breath as her perfume assaulted his senses. He loved his mom, but wished she didn’t wear such strong perfume all the time.

“I think it looks nice. How long are we staying at this location? Should I bother enrolling in school?” She smiled, showing perfectly white teeth.

“Of course you’re going to school. Don’t be silly.”

The driver walked past them with Davis’ bags. Amanda Steel followed with Davis.

“Thank you John. I’ll be sure that William puts a bonus in your paycheck for getting Davis here safely. Maria, please show Davis and John to my son’s room.” A small Hispanic woman, her dark hair pulled back in a messy braid, came out of the kitchen, some flour smeared on her brown cheek.

“Si.” Amanda’s beautiful smiling face turned dark.

“What have I said about Spanish in this house?” She bowed, her dark eyes fearful. Davis felt sorry for her.

“Apologies. I will show them.” She led them up the winding staircase and to a large room at the back of the house, the windows showing the massive backyard, with a pool and a tennis court. Davis glanced outside, taking it in and hoping his mother didn’t have visions of him playing tennis.

John put the bags down and left the room. Maria seemed to be waiting to be dismissed. What did my parents do to this poor woman?

“Thank you Maria. That is all for now. And I’m sorry about my mother. She doesn’t like not understanding people. She told people in Japan to not speak Japanese around her.” Maria smiled gratefully and left the room. Opening up the window to try and get some fresh air, Davis set to work unpacking his bags and getting his room in order. There wasn’t much in decor, which is exactly how his parents were. Just enough to make it look nice, but not too cluttered. That was their motto.

Davis’ parents were very wealthy. William Steel, his father, owned a worldwide technology company. It had started as a simple web design business and then expanded into creating their own apps, microchips and much more. Steel Enterprise had locations in Japan, Germany, France, Australia, and five in the USA. The newest was in LA, which is why they had moved to the US from Japan. They were not Japanese, but Davis’ father had moved to Tokyo a year after marrying Amanda because she got a huge contract offer.

Amanda Steel had started her fashion career as a model, with her lean figure, blue eyes and long blonde hair. After she got bored of modelling she moved into designing clothes. She was doing really well for herself and had built a fashion empire from nothing. Starting off by making her own designs in her basement, she got a job offer to work for a high end Japanese designer. Having made connections while working for the designer, she stole a lot of clients and built her empire in less than a year.

Chapter 1

Davis was born in Tokyo and had learned the language from his nanny, Yoko, who taught him in secret. She was fired the first time the Steels heard Davis speaking Japanese to her. Even though he was young, the boy learned that speaking Japanese around his parents was not a good idea and was much more careful with his new nanny, Mai. Davis spent most of his life in Japan, flourishing in school and he made friends easily. His parents were not supportive of the friends, telling him to not be distracted from his goal.

“One day you will have to build an empire to keep the family name going. You do not have time to make friends and get distracted. Unless they are rich with successful parents. Then they may be your friends.” Davis hated this rule and kept most of his friends a secret from his parents. That was easy because they both travelled a lot for work and never took him with unless it was summer break.

What Would You Do

Evening shadows were drawing in by the time William Steel came home, tired and hungry. He was a tall man, six foot five, with brown hair and brown eyes. Amanda used to say Davis got his good looks from his father, though Davis had his mother’s lean frame. William had put on some weight from sitting at a desk too much. Maria rushed around with two others to prepare the table, doing everything they could to avoid being yelled at. Entering the house, he kicked off his shoes and entered the dining room, dropping a kiss on his wife’s cheek.

“Sorry I’m late, my love. Some idiot almost lost all the schematics for a new project. Can you believe we got our first military contract already? It’s a big one too.” Smiling, Amanda took a seat next to him.

“That’s wonderful dear. I’m glad you got everything fixed. Good help can be so hard to find.” Looking at the spread in front of them, William shook his head.

“At least it smells good. Where’s Davis? Has he arrived yet.” As if on cue, Davis walked into the kitchen, plopping himself into a chair across the table from his mother. “Davis, my boy, how was your flight?” Davis’ stomach growled and he reached for one of the steaks.

“Everything went smoothly, and Joe even showed me a few things. I think he wants me to become a pilot. But this food smells amazing and I’m starving, so can we eat first and talk later?” Laughing William nodded, accepting a glass of wine from one of the servers.

“Excellent idea son. I too am quite hungry. Let’s eat.”

What do you think?

Well, not an intense chapter 1, but then again, we don’t want to go too crazy off the hop. Honestly, I have no idea what I’m doing, but I have a story in my head that wants to come out. Not sure that I want to publish drama style books, but I guess we will see. Let me know if you liked Chapter 1 of What Would You Do and I’ll see you next week with the next chapter.
