I have a new obsession: Cooking Shows. The Food Network has become one of my favourite channels, especially to pass the time during slow night shifts. In today’s blog I will share how this all started and what I intend to do with this new obsession. So, let’s dive in.
How it Started
For those who have known me for a while you know that I had no desire to watch shows about cooking. So, what changed? My dear mother. When I was out for Christmas she introduced me to this show called “Beat Bobby Flay.” In the show two chefs compete against each other for the chance to up against Chef Bobby Flay. The goal, as you may have guessed, is to beat Bobby by creating a better dish for three judges. The food that they come up with, and without a recipe, is crazy. My mom and I ended up watching a marathon of episodes and I enjoyed them so much, that I continued watching them when I came back to Manitoba.
How I’m Using It
Now, you’re probably wondering how I could use Cooking Shows. Honestly, I have no intention of ever being able to cook as well as a chef, or wanting to beat a clock like they do and present a meal that is aesthetically pleasing at the same time. I’m lucky if I can make a pretty dish when I take my time with it. However, it does exactly what I want it to: inspires me to cook more. You read last week about my cooking goals. Sometimes I just don’t want to cook. Then I watch all these chefs create these delicious meals and before I know it, I’m pulling out my cookbooks.
Not Letting Cooking Shows Take Over
Now, there is something that I do not want to happen; my media addiction to take hold of this new obsession and get out of control with it. Usually when I find a new show that I fall in love with, it’s all I want to watch. And I want to watch it all day. I am determined to not let that help me this time. So far I have it under control. I usually make sure that everything I want to get done first, is complete. Or, have it on as background noise. In fact, I’m currently watching Chopped while I write this blog. Soon I’ll be heading to the kitchen to make some fresh bread – another favourite thing . Hopefully I can get a cookbook all about bread this year. New goal.
Cooking Shows To Cooking Goals
As I mentioned earlier, I want to use cooking shows to motivate me to cook more. In a previous blog, I shared that one of my cooking goals is to cook every recipe in my cookbooks – in order to get more cookbooks. In some weird way, watching highly trained chefs come up with new recipes to try and win competitions inspires me. There are some recipes in my cookbooks that intimidate me because of their complexity. Take bread for example. I love the idea of cooking bread, but to make it myself is really intimidating. However, I made some on Sunday, as those following me on Instagram and Facebook would have seen. It turned out so good, so I’m making it again.
Moving Forward
I really hope to have blogs that show lots of delicious food that I make. Making them aesthetically pleasing would be a bonus, and I am trying. You’ll see some of the food I made this week in Friday’s blog. So make sure you keep an eye out for that. I’m really excited about some of the recipes that I have been trying and the recipes that I will be trying. We won’t go too much into that today. So, I will continue to enjoy the cooking shows, though Beating Bobby Flay is still my favourite. However, I will also work at continuing to make sure I don’t let my obsession take me away from my goals. I want to continue the improvements in my life that I started last week to kick off the new year. Hopefully I can inspire you as well. Anything can happen, if I try.
