I’ve done it! After a long time I have finished another book! Book number two is done and this one was not an audio book. This one was a physical book. So, I will share my thoughts on this book and we can celebrate that I put out a second blog this week! Okay, let’s dive into my review of Vendetta!
Summary of Vendetta
So, what is Vendetta about? This is a Christian Mystery written by Lisa Harris. It is the first book in the Nikki Boyd series. This series follows a woman named Nikki Boyd. After her sister went missing years ago she quit her job and trained to become a police officer. Eventually she makes it onto a task force that specialises in missing persons cases. On her day off while she’s spending the day with Tyler, a close friend, she receives a phone call that there’s been a missing person call near where she is. Tyler agrees to go with her to ensure it’s not just a girl lost in the woods. Tyler, former military, training to be a psychiatrist. He was also the husband of Nikki’s best friend before that friend passed away.
The Main Story
As Nikki and Tyler look into the case they find out some information that makes it clear that the missing girl did not just go for a walk in the woods and get lost. They follow the clues and Nikki’s worst nightmare comes to life as they find something that reminds her of the serial killer who took her sister. Her sister, to this day, has not been found dead or alive. She believes the same person who took her sister, known as the Angel Abductor, has taken this girl as well. Now Nikki has to battle with memories of one of the worst days of her life, work with her team to try and find the girl before she ends up dead like most of the other victims, and finally catch the Angel Abductor. Oh, and there’s a family emergency on top of it all.
What I Liked
The case was riveting, intense, and everything you wanted in a mystery/thriller. I don’t read a lot of Christian Fiction because I don’t find it interesting. Most that I have come across are very, well romance or drama based. Not my cup of tea. So, finding a book like this, which was also Christian based, was absolutely amazing. The story was well paced, and gave you the perfect amount of suspense that you wanted to keep reading.
Dislikes?
I would say that I honestly don’t know how to fill this part out. Sometimes I feel like female characters, in place of law enforcement, feel that they need to always overdo it to make up for the fact that they’re a woman. At least, they get written that way. They always tend to be written as the ones who refuse to take care of themselves during the case, or they always are acting like they have something to prove. I don’t know if this is reality or not, but I find it annoying. That just might be a me thing. And the relationship between Tyler and Nikki was just another added complication that didn’t need to be one, in my opinion.
Vendetta Rating and Final Thoughts
I gave Vendetta a 4 star rating. If I’m being honest, I don’t think I gave the book the full appreciation that it deserved. The reading slump has been so hard this year and nothing that I pick up gets me excited when it’s time to sit and read. Which sucks because I have so many books to read, and I want to go back to the book exchange in a week. This means that I need to read. But, we’re off track here. Vendetta was a good read and I did go to the library to pick up the second book of the series. The way the case ended seemed a bit too “well that’s a good coincidence” but it was good. So, I still will recommend it. I just wasn’t a 5 star read because it didn’t really get me out of my reading slump.
Trying to Escape the Reading Slump
Honestly, I feel like I’m trying everything to get out of the slump. I’m reading different books, trying to find the one that gets me excited about reading again. Hopefully, I might have found one. I’m currently reading an intense thriller type. Of course, after I put it in Good Reads as a current read I find out it’s the second book in a series. Now I’ll need to find the first book. But, maybe, just maybe, this will be the book to get me out of the slump. I’m curious. If you accidentally start reading a book in a series that’s not the first one, do you stop and go find the first one? Or do you keep reading because you’ve already started? Let me know in the comments below. And I’ll see you next time.
