Twisters

lightning and tornado hitting village

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve done a movie review. Probably because I have not been watching a lot of new movies. As I touched on in a previous blog, I’m going through a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle phase and that’s all I want to watch. Movies, TV series, YouTube videos. But, I did go see the new Twisters movie this last weekend. Here are my thoughts on it.

Twisters Summary

The movie begins with Kate, a girl who loves storms and chasing them. She and her friends are working on a science project involving tornadoes in hopes to win a grant. Unfortunately, things do not go as planned and she loses three of her closest friends. Jump forward and she now lives in New York and has a job where she monitors the weather and helps decide if they should be issuing weather warnings. A visit from the one other friend who survived the tornado incident brings her back to Oklahoma. He has a business where they are trying to get imaging on tornadoes with some new technology. He knows that she’s their best chance at getting the data because Kate is really good at watching nature for the signs.

This is where our second main character comes in. Tyler and his friends have a YouTube channel where they chase tornadoes and capture the experience on film. He immediately takes an interest in Kate, especially when she tries to give him false information on where to find tornadoes. As the movie progresses Kate is forced to face her past demons and what happened to her friends while learning that Tyler is not who she first thought he was. Together they try to bring her project back and put it into action to save a town from a tornado, risking their lives and their friends lives in the process.

Likes

I liked the story line and the relationship between Kate and Tyler. Honestly, I’m surprised, but I was rooting for them to get together. The way they showed the aftermath of tornadoes, and didn’t make the movie all about how cool storm chasing could be, was another aspect of the movie that I enjoyed. Watching Kate wrestle with what happened to her friends as she gets pulled back into storm chasing was done well. I don’t think I would have liked it if she just jumped back in with no afterthought. And seeing the character growth in all characters involved was fun to watch as friendships were made and restored. All in all, I really enjoyed the movie.

Dislikes

As you all know by now, I’m not really a romance gal. Yes, I thought Kate and Tyler were cute, but I wanted a movie about tornadoes, not romance. There wasn’t a lot of it, but there were moments that were just a bit too Hallmark movie like. I even joked with my friend that this is why we don’t meet guys. We’re not storm chasing. This earned me an eye roll from my friend. I think that was basically it though, and don’t have any other complaints.

Twisters Rating

Overall, I’m rating Twisters a 4.5. I liked the story, the characters, the one liners. It was an enjoyable and entertaining movie. Which is exactly what I want in a movie. I would see this movie again if I’m being honest. The cheesy romance nuggets that made it have a slight Hallmark movie vibe keeps it from a 5 star for me. But, this is a movie that I highly recommend and I will probably watch it again. Just not in theatres because I have to be smart with my money. I’m not sure if I would give any trigger warnings, as I didn’t see anything. I guess if tornadoes scare you, maybe don’t watch a movie about tornadoes. But there were no sexual scenes, I don’t recall a lot of vulgar language. I did hear that someone got motion sickness from watching the movie, so I guess that could be a warning as well. It’s a natural disaster thriller and I enjoyed it.

Should I do More Movie Reviews

What do you think? Should I do more reviews on movies that I watch? Old or new? I’ve certainly watched some movies this year, but I haven’t really talked about them. In the fall I am hoping to go watch the new Venom movie. Perhaps I’ll put that review on my blog as well. I know I don’t review things like other people do. But this is how I know how to review. Perhaps as time goes on my reviews could become more elaborate, but who knows. Anything can happen if I try.
