Orphan X – Book Review

silhouette of man

Thank you to everyone who encouraged me to get a library card. I was so excited to find out my library had the entire Orphan X series and I immediately got the first book. Honestly, I would have grabbed more than one at a time, but the second book had been signed out already. Hopefully that gets returned soon. But here is my review on Book one: Orphan X.

What Orphan x is about

So, the series is written by Gregg Hurwitz. It follows our main character, Evan Smoak, who was trained to be an assassin. The story does start after he left the program, but you do get a lot of back story. This includes his training, which was quite interesting in some ways. It also reveals why he left the program. Now, as a freelance “helper”, he helps people who are in situations that leave them feeling completely hopeless. He gets a call from a girl in trouble and helps her before asking for his “payment”, which is not money. She simply has to find someone in a similar situation and give them his number.

I really don’t want to give spoilers, so I’ll try to be vague here. Evan gets a call that leaves him questioning a lot of things, including if he can trust his client. And there are people who keep finding them and try to take them out. As pieces slowly fall into place Evan discovers something that turns his world upside down and leaves him with more questions and nearly costs him his life.

What I liked

Oh man. There was so much that I liked and I don’t know how to share it without spoiling the book. The action scenes left you breathless. Certain characters went back and fourth on if you could trust them or not. Lots of intensity makes you want to keep reading and before you know it, the book is done. I did not want to put this book down, and got upset when I had to go to work because that meant I had to wait to find out the rest. Gregg has this way of drawing you in and not letting you go until the end of the book, but then also leaves you wanting more.

What i didn’t like

As you know, I’m not a romance girl. There wasn’t romance per say, but there was a scene that, while not fully smut, you knew was a sex scene. I didn’t think this was needed in the book at all and could have been skipped over. For those who are like me, and don’t like reading scenes like this, it is easy to skip over and doesn’t go into too much detail. In the grand scheme of the book, you blink and it’s done. But like I said, I do not think it was a scene that needed to be written, but rather could have been skipped and picked up afterwards.

Overall rating of orphan x

Over all, I’m giving Orphan X a 5 star review. Other than that one little scene, this book had everything I wanted and hoped for. Because I had spoiled it a bit for myself, by accidentally reading the sixth book first. So, there were a few giveaways because of that. However, it was still an incredible read and I’m upset that I can’t just flow into the second one now because someone else has it. I’ve put myself on a list to get it next and apparently I’m at the top of that list. Hopefully, whoever has it, finishes it soon. But I do highly recommend this book, and if the rest of the series is like the two I read (Orphan X and Prodigal Son) then I have a feeling I’ll be recommending the whole series.

Until the next one

I did get two other books from the library. They are both from Jaime Jo Wright, who wrote The Curse of Misty Wayfair – the last book I reviewed. I am very excited to read more of her books because she is another author who drew me in and didn’t let me go until the end of the book. Armed with a library card, and my love of reading returned, you can all expect a lot more book reviews this year. And I’m excited to announce that I actually got to meet another local author. And she agreed to be a Beta Reader for my novel. Which is another step towards publication, so that’s super exciting. So, until the next blog, which may or may not be another book review, I will say goodbye. I hope you all have a great week and I’ll see you Wednesday.
