On Top Of The World

This weekend didn’t quite go as planned. Which is why this blog is coming out today instead of Saturday. However, I did get to go on my first hike of the summer, finally. It was a lot of fun to do with my friends and even had some surprise twists. Let me tell you about my hike. The trail was called On Top of the World.

Choosing a Trail

So, originally we had just planned a beach day and wanted to check out the beach at Falcon Lake. However, the weather wasn’t exactly in our favour. It wasn’t terrible, but not exactly hot. There was a cool breeze and it almost felt cool when the sun went behind the clouds. So, we decided that we would do a hike first and then go to the beach for a picnic and swim if the weather was favourable. On the drive there one of my friends looked up the trails in Falcon Lake and we found one that looked pretty and said there would be a nice view at the midway point. This trail was called On Top of the World.

Starting On Top of the World

The trail head was off the parking lot of a resort, so we headed there and decided to use the bathroom quickly. The resort was beautiful. Because I attract bugs, especially mosquitoes, we all applied bug spray before searching for the trail head. First, we took a picture of the map, just in case. As we headed out we were appreciative of the cooler weather because we were hiking in the afternoon. The breeze kept us from getting too hot. As for the trail, it was relatively easy to follow. And that was a good thing as we all took turns leading. It was a decent hike as well. Not too easy and not too hard. Considering some of us, especially me, are a bit clumsy and can trip over a flat surface, this was a good thing.

Injury?

Speaking of clumsy, I sort of injured myself. At one point on the hike, while I was leading of course, I landed funny and my friends saw my ankle twist. They were immediately concerned as it had looked painful. And they were worried about the remainder of the hike. Thankfully, my ankle is used to landing weirdly and after a few steps there was no pain. The rest of the hike and then later at the beach I was completely fine. Later that evening though, my foot started to hurt and I suspect it was a delayed response to the stumble. I’m happy to announce that it was not long lasting, though it does still ache a bit if I walk around barefoot. Nothing to fuss about though.

On Top of the World View

So, we got to the midway point and got to see the view. The picture you see for this blog shows some of it. Ironically I didn’t just take a picture of it. I know, bad Stephanie. Sorry about that. The drop off the cliff was a bit dizzying, but still a breathtaking view. There was also a little bench there for us to sit on and take a quick break of bananas and water. Then we were off again and had a pleasant surprise. The trail was lined with blueberry bushes. There was a family ahead of us that were picking them and filling pails and bags with the berries. Still small, the blueberries were a nice treat as we would pick a few as we walked and eat them. We even joked that if we were attacked by a bear we would just throw blueberries at it.

A Great Day

After the hike we headed to the beach and went for a quick swim. Even with the breeze we were a bit sweaty and sticky from bug spray. Unfortunately, as we entered the water the sun decided to take a break. After a bit of swimming we left the water and went to eat our meal that we had packed. We didn’t stay long after that as I was juggling some work stuff and had to head back to the hotel. And we were getting cold as well as the sun wasn’t really on our side. Overall, it was a great day and I’m glad for the memories that my friends and I could make together.
