On the Cliffs of Foxglove Manor

It’s been a while, but I’m finally back with another book review. This book took a long time to get through. Not because it was a long book. I just was not in a reading mood lately and just wanted to watch YouTube and other media sources. But, here is my thoughts for the book On the Cliffs of Foxglove Manor.

Summary of Foxglove Manor

On the Cliffs of Foxglove Manor is another book written by Jaime Jo Wright. We follow two women in different time periods, as we do with her other books. Adria, who lived in 1885 is a young woman who was sent to Foxglove Manor after a suicide attempt. Kailey, who lives in present time, has accepted a job as an aide at Foxglove manor after it was turned into a care home for the elderly. She moves there with her autistic older brother, Jude. Both women get caught up in the same mystery and ghost story. The manor is said to be haunted by a young girl named Lucy and she guards the hidden, stolen, confederate gold. With so much on the line for both women, years apart, they strive to get to the bottom of the mystery to save themselves and others.

Highlights

The plot was interesting. I’ll be honest, I don’t know much about the civil war or the Confederates verses Union. As things began to unravel I was curious as to what was going to happen with the missing gold. After all, if Adria and her associates were searching for it in 1885, would Kailey and her friends be able to find it in the present? There were some characters that you couldn’t help but smile as you read about them. I was also interested to see how they would explain this “haunting”. There was one scene in the book where a character was hospitalised. She was clearly on some strong pain medication because the way she acted was amusing to all involved.

The Lows

As interesting as the concept sounded, I’m sorry to say that I did not enjoy this book. The few characters that made me smile were side characters that popped in a few times here and there. The main characters, Adria and Kailey, for the most part annoyed me. The guys didn’t really draw me in. I guess Axel grew on me, but Mr. Crayne did not. When the romance was addressed in the book it was so heavy that I just wanted to throw the book away. Again, not a romance fan. Having an autistic character in the book, for most of the book, just felt like it was meant to be an extra complication.

Rating for Foxglove Manor

I gave Foxglove Manor a 3 star review on Goodreads. If I think about it, I would say it’s probably more of a 2.75. However, I will say this. I’m not saying that I don’t recommend this book. Jaime Jo Wright is an incredible author. But I was not in the mood for one of her books, which is why I did not enjoy it. Maybe if I would have put it down and come back to it another time I would have enjoyed it. It couldn’t hold my attention because I wanted to watch Ninja Turtles, or read the next Orphan X book, or watch Twisters. So, if you like mystery with a touch of romance, I highly recommend this book for you. My heart just didn’t want it.

Next

I have come to the conclusion that I can only enjoy Jaime Jo Wright books in small doses. After all, when I read the Lost Boys of Barlowe Theater, I loved the book. But, I had taken a break from Jaime’s books before reading it. The mistake I made was jumping straight back into another Jaime book. So, I’ll take a break before looking for any more of her books. Originally I was going to read the 4th book in the Red Rising Saga next. However, I can feel that I have no desire to read that book right now. So, I will be jumping into book 7 of the Orphan X series. Something tells me, because I’ve been eager to read it, that this next book will be a fast read. And with me so far behind in my reading goal, I think that is wise.

Behind on the Reading Goal

You guys, I feel so far behind on my reading goal. And this is the one goal that I desperately want to complete. For that reason I know I need to change my tactics. I have to read books that are going to hold my attention. Mood reading seems a bit weird to me, but I think I’m going to give it a shot. What am I in the mood to read? Those are the books that are going to help me read faster. I’ll get through books faster if I don’t want to put them down, rather than don’t want to pick them up. That’s why I’m taking a break from continuing the Red Rising Saga. I was going to continue for the sake of finishing the series, not because I wanted to read it. So, I’ll wait till I want to read it. Right now, Orphan X is the series I want to read, so it’s the series I’m going to read. After that, anything can happen, but I have to keep reading.
