Happy Saturday everyone. I hope you had a great week. Mine was quite exhausting. However, that’s for another blog. Today we continue with Chapter 5, Mom, and hopefully we can get some answers. So, let’s dive in and see what awaits us today. Enjoy.
Mom
Adam was wide awake as he listened to his mom on the phone. The calmness in her voice, as if nothing was wrong, bothered Adam. He just couldn’t figure out why.
“Mom, why didn’t you call me sooner? Where are you?”
“I’m sorry hunny. It’s just been crazy here at the diner. I should be home next week for a few days.” Adam frowned. Still with the diner story. Should he reveal that he knew she was lying?
“I still don’t understand what’s going on. Why would you get a job in a different town?” His mother sighed on the other end. She clearly didn’t want an interrogation.
“We can talk more when I get home. It’s been a long day and I’m tired. Your father told me how worried you were, so I called. I do need to get some sleep. Six o’clock comes quickly when you’re exhausted. I’ll see you next week. Love you.” She hung up before Adam could get any more questions in. He stared at his phone in disbelief. His parents were getting sloppy dodging his questions lately. What were they hiding?

“Wait a second. Did you tell your mom we called every diner and they have never heard of her?” Adam shook his head and Avery frowned. “None of this makes sense. I was thinking that a call from your mom would clear things up, but instead it just creates more questions. Where is she? What is she doing? Why lie to her son about it?” Adam leaned back against the tree. He knew they wouldn’t be able to keep their voices down when he told Avery about the phone call, so they were sitting outside in the park.
“My parents have been dodging my questions all my life, but lately, they’re sloppy with their answers. Or maybe it’s because I’m actually fact checking now. Perhaps all this time they have given me fake answers. Why would they lie to me though? What could they possibly have to hide?” Avery waited while two children ran past them before speaking.
“Do you think your parents are criminals?” Adam looked over at her. “I mean, think about it. The whole idea of skipping town, without any kind of warning, and no real reason. I can understand if they had jobs where moving around was obvious. But a diner waitress and car mechanic, I’m not buying it. I’d question your dad if you had not seen him at work. Do you usually see your mom at work at past diners?” Adam nodded, looking up at the sky as if searching for answers.
“I would always head to the diner after school and wait for my mom to finish. This is the first time I’ve gone to a garage though.” Avery stood up, brushing leaves and grass off her jeans.
“That settles it. Let’s head inside and look at all the towns you can remember living in. Let’s see if anything stands out at the time your family lived in each town.”

Opening her eyes, she looked around the dimly lit room. How did she get there? When did she leave the box? Trying to sit up she became aware that she was strapped to a cold, metal table. She was just in her jeans and sports bra. Where were the rest of her clothes? Struggling, she tried to loosen the restraints on her wrists and ankles, panic building up inside her. Why was she here? What was going to happen to her? She heard a door creak open and heavy footsteps echoing down the hall. Sobbing, she tugged harder, desperate. She had to get away.
Mom ending
Well my friends, it’s just a short one today. I have a full day and really had to squeeze this in. I hope you all enjoyed this chapter, and I can’t wait to write the next one. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and I’ll see you Monday with a new blog, or next week Saturday, if you’re just reading the novel. Goodbye for now.
