Missing

So much for getting two blogs out this week. Well, I suppose we will see what happens this weekend. However, for now, let’s get on with our latest book review. I just finished my 7th book of the year (how sad is that) and I have some thoughts on it. So, let me tell you about Missing.

Missing Summary

So, Missing is the second book in the Nikki Boyd Files series written by Lisa Harris. The first was Vendetta. In this book we follow Nikki again. She and her partner, Jack, are called to a homicide crime scene where there are two bodies, but neither are the home owners of the house. They appear to be missing. They end up finding the man of the house, on a boat belonging to Nikki’s friend, Tyler. Bad news, he’s dead. With the wife still missing, and the body count rising, it’s a race to figure out what’s going on, who’s involved, and find Lucy (the missing woman) before she becomes the next victim. And to complicate matters more, Tyler ends up involved in the case while Nikki tries to contain her newfound feelings for him.

What I Liked

There was a lot to like about the book. The characters are enjoyable, the relationships show growth, and the case was intriguing. There were many times I thought I had the case figured out, and then I was proven wrong. We got to know some other characters that were just mentioned in the first book. And there was a bit of follow up on things that were mentioned in the first book. Which was nice, but I also appreciated that it didn’t take over the story. It let you know that Nikki was still thinking about it and working at it, but she wasn’t letting herself be completely consumed by it to the point that it interfered with work.

What I Disliked

The end. There was a point in the case where I was like wait, I’ve read this before and it was too similar to the first book. But on top of that, the way the case wrapped up was too….convenient. I can’t really say more without major spoilers, but there was something that happened in the first quarter of the book and nothing happened with it till the end when they needed it. The whole thing just felt, I don’t know, rushed? Compared to the flow of the rest of the book it was just very abrupt. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the whole complicated relationship with Nikki and Tyler. There were times I just wanted to smack her.

Rating of Missing

I still gave Missing a 4 star rating. I enjoyed most of the book. Like I said, the case was intriguing and kept me on my toes. I just didn’t care for the slow burn style romance that was happening and the ending felt like a jerky stop. Overall, a good book and I do want to continue the series, so I’ll be heading to my local library in the next week or so to get it. I still would recommend this series to anyone looking for a good Christian mystery novel.

After Missing

Well, I have two other library books that are due in a few weeks. I can renew them one more time, but if possible, I want to only have to renew one of them. You’re probably thinking, no problem. Just start reading it. Well, one I have started, as I’ve mentioned before. So, that will be the next library book I’ll be tackling. But….there’s a book that I got from the book exchange. This book has been screaming at me to pick it up. And, as we stand right now, I only have 1 book to bring to the exchange this month. Honestly, I am torn. And I am trying to bring down the number of books I go through at one time. I also have an audiobook started. It’s the first of a trilogy where I own books 2 and 3, but was unable to find 1.

Strategy for the Month

I think I will do some body double videos for reading to help me read a bit more. The thing that annoys me the most is that I do enjoy reading. I just seem to have a hard time staying focused on what I’m reading for long periods of time. Maybe body double videos will help? I do put them on when I need to get work done, and it seems to help a little. Things will be easier when I don’t have to work night shifts. Then I can hopefully get a more consistent schedule and not be tired all the time. I’m currently fighting to keep my eyes open as I type this. Naps are wonderful, but I would like to have more energy for the day. My goal is to finish 3 more books this month. So, if you’ll excuse me. I have some reading to do.
