Alright, time to let this guy shine for a bit. I’m really excited about this chapter. So, let’s keep this short and sweet, as per usual. Here is Chapter 23, Mick.
Mick
The commotion below told Mick and Valerie that they had been spotted and the two took off. Mick’s mind raced as he thought about all the escape routes they could take. The first thing they needed to do was get rid of their pursuers. There was no way that they could get packed up, in the vehicle and get away. He stopped and Valerie turned to give him a questioning look.
“I’ll try to lead them away. Get to the cabin and get Drew and Adam out of here. We will meet at the lakeside location. If I’m not there in two days, contact headquarters for an evacuation plan.” Valerie shook her head.
“We are not leaving you behind.” He started to walk back in the direction of their pursuers, knowing they had to think they spotted him without him knowing.
“That’s an order Valerie. Adam cannot get captured, or worse. Now get going!” He jogged off and Valerie cursed before taking off at a dead run for the cabin.

Mick watched the men trying to track them. He couldn’t help but chuckle. Their tracking skills were not very good, fortunately for him. However, that didn’t mean he could relax around them. What they lacked in tracking, they made up for in other ways. Mick recognised one of the men as Fred, Elijah’s best hit man. If he was here they were in trouble. Unfortunately for these men, Mick knew these woods much better than them. And he knew exactly where he wanted to lead them.
Silently, he circled the men till he was on the east side of the woods. The cabin was north of their location, but to the east was a swamp. If you didn’t know the area well, you could get lost, or stuck in the mud, quite easily. Mick took a deep breath, exhaling slowly to calm himself. He just needed to lead them through the swamp long enough for the others to escape. Breaking a branch, he looked towards the hunters. Looking up, they saw him right before he took off and gave chase. Mick’s plan was working.

Valerie burst into the cabin, causing Drew to jump up, gun in hand. He relaxed when he saw who it was, but didn’t lower the gun.
“Where’s Mick?” Adam had also woken up and he quickly grabbed a bottle of water from their bags and handed it to Valerie, who managed a thankful smile as she drank and pointed to the bags. “Adam, get our stuff together, now!” Drew moved to the door, gun ready, his eyes scanning the area. Valerie finally caught her breath.
“We spotted Elijah’s men a few clicks away. Mick is leading them away, giving us a chance to escape. We have to go now.” Adam stopped packing.
“Wait, we’re leaving him behind?” Valerie placed a bag in his hands.
“He will meet us at another safe house. Mick is completely capable of taking care of himself. He used to be in the military and protection duty was his specialty, so he will be fine. However, we can’t let his efforts go to waste by standing around here. Let’s go.” Adam sighed, still uncertain, but grabbed another bag and followed Drew out to the car. Quickly they loaded the vehicle and Drew got into the driver’s seat. Valerie turned in the passenger seat to Adam. “Stay low.”

Mick dove behind some brush, leaning back against it, trying to catch his breath. Not only had he underestimated how quick these guys were, but they had called for reinforcements, who had tried to flank him. It had taken all of his skill to avoid them and get away from both groups of pursuers. He glanced at his watch. Hopefully that was enough time for the others to escape. Now he had to escape. Peeking around the brush, he saw the men looking for him. There was no way he could sneak away. His only hope was to lose them in the swamp. Drawing his gun, he checked to see that it was ready, should he need to use it, before he jumped to his feet and took off at a run.
Fred cursed as Mick took off again and the men chased after him. He knew Mick was highly trained, so the fact that they had spotted him was confusing. As he ran after the men chasing Mick, his mind was going through the whole pursuit. It was too easy. Then it hit him and he yelled at his men to stop, catching up with them.
“He’s leading us. Adam is not in this direction, and I doubt he’s here anymore. Mick is smart. He led us away from those with Adam so that they could escape. Well, not anymore. Back to the cars. Maybe we can find the others on the highway somewhere.” One of the men pointed at the figure of Mick running off.
“What about him?” Fred pulled his sniper rifle off his back, took aim at Mick and fired!
Did Mick Just Die?
