I finished another book and it isn’t even the one that I started with. You’re probably confused. Let me explain. I had started reading a book and it just wasn’t hitting the way I thought it would, so I picked up two other books and read a chapter from each to see which one was more interesting. They were both interesting, but this one held my attention the most. So, let me tell you about Long After Midnight.
Long After Midnight Summary
Long After Midnight is a thriller written by Iris Johansen. We are introduced to Kate Denby, a doctor who is working for a big pharmaceutical company. A man named Noah Smith is trying desperately to hire her, to the point where she is annoyed. He won’t take no for an answer. What she doesn’t know is Noah has been working on a secret project, and he needs her to complete it. However, both their lives go up in flames when Noah’s rival finds out about his project and decides to eliminate all threats. Noah and his allies help Kate keep her son, and her ex mother in law safe when they are targeted by a crazed killer, sent by Noah’s rival.
One Thing After Another
Kate and Noah know that the only way to end the threat is complete Noah’s project. While Seth, a mercenary and friend to Noah, watches Kate’s family, she gets to work with Noah. However, nothing is simple and Kate must go through many trials and challenges in order to protect those she loves.
What I Liked
There was a lot to love about this book, in my opinion. Iris wrote this thriller in a way that kept me on edge the whole time. I was either waiting for something to go wrong, or biting my nails and wondering what was going to happen next. I grew very attached to some of our characters, even when I wanted to shake them and tell them they were being stupid – mainly Kate. However, she was still a very well written character and I saw lots of growth in her throughout the book. And the suspense made it really hard to put the book down. I flew through this book.
What I Disliked
There was one scene that made me uncomfortable, like Iris wanted to write a sex scene but wasn’t committed to it. All the other scenes were fade-to-black and just insinuated that it happened. So, the one where she started to describe it just felt out of place, and it’s not what I want in a book. I think that was the only thing that really threw me off. Even when the characters were annoying me and I wanted to smack them upside the head, I still really cared about them. Well, except the villains. I was okay when bad things happened to them.
Rating for Long After Midnight
I gave Long After Midnight a 5 star rating. Even with the one scene, which you blinked and it was done, could not take away from this book. I really enjoyed this story and I’m so glad that I picked it up. In fact, I may even look for more books from this author. I’ll see what happens.
What’s Next
I’m actually planning a second attempt of a 24 hour readathon. This time I have a plan. If a book isn’t holding my interest enough to keep wanting to read, I’ll put it to the side and read another. Just like I did in this case. The one book I was reading was good, but not holding my attention, so I started another. Currently I have two books that I’m reading, and then I have 5 others that I grabbed on my last library visit. And you guys! I found the 9th Orphan X book! I’m so excited to get to that one. However, I do want to try and get through the first two that I’ve started. However, we will see how the readathon goes. I’m thinking I’ll start it after my shift tomorrow – at 11pm. I have trouble sleeping at night anyway.
The Goal
My goal is to read 4 books. I’ll be using the timer method again, so if I need to take a nap I’ll pause the timer. And I’ll need to pause to write Monday’s blog. Which will most likely be a book review. And then Wednesday I’ll let you know how the readathon went. I was going to aim for 5 books, but the fantasy book I’ve started is quite thick, and I’ve only read two chapters. So, that will take me a while and I want to be realistic. If I surpass that goal I’ll be over the moon. Can you guys imagine if I finished all 7 books that I have lined up? Honestly, I would be shocked. But it would be a nice jump in my reading challenge. Well, as we all know – anything is possible if you try.
