Fear – Chapter 11

smartphone in woman hands

Hello my friends. How are you all doing? To be honest, I am not having the greatest start to my day as I received some news that upset me. Oh well, nothing to do but move forward. Now, onto better things, like our next chapter. Fear promises to be an interesting chapter 11, so let’s dive in and leave the real world behind for a bit.

Fear

“I’m coming, just hang on.” Adam ducked back into his bedroom, grabbing some clothes to throw on. He had just gotten out of the shower when he heard a knock on his door. Glancing at the clock on his way to the door he shook his head. Avery was early. The knock sounded again and Adam threw open the door. “I did tell you – oh, Detective Roberts. Sorry, I thought you were someone else. Any word on my parents yet?” He stepped aside letting the detective, and the woman with him, enter the house before closing the door. As she passed him, Adam spotted the badge on the woman’s belt. Another detective?

“Adam, this is my partner, Detective Mathers.” He shook her hand as they headed into the living room and sat down. “Adam, you said your mom worked in a diner wherever you moved, right?” He nodded. “Did your family ever live in Hadley, Massachusetts?” Adam nodded again, confusion evident on his face. “Do you know a woman named Melissa Newman?” Frowning, Adam slowly shook his head.

“I’m sorry, but that name doesn’t sound familiar. I mean, we lived in Hadley three years ago. I’ve lived in a few other towns since then. What does this have to do with my parents?” Detective Roberts frowned, then shook his head.

“I guess nothing. The woman that we asked you to identify is Melissa Newman. I was wondering if she was maybe connected to your parents disappearance.” Adam sighed.

“I’m sorry, but to my memory, I don’t remember her.” Adam paused for a minute before continuing. “Detective, I am curious as to why you asked me to come in to identify the woman. My family just moved here and I never filed a missing person’s report when my mom went missing. So, why did you come here and ask me to identify the body?”

Daniel wiped sweat from his brow. It was warm out today. Tossing his shovel to the side, he climbed out of the hole he had just dug and walked over to his truck. Opening up a cooler, he pulled out a bottle of water and chugged half of it before his cell phone rang. Glancing at the caller id, he put down the water and answered it.

“Yes sir?” He frowned as he listened to the voice on the other end. “I see. I don’t think it will be a problem. Adam doesn’t know anything. He is completely in the dark about all of this.” The caller responded, sounding less than pleased. “I promise, Adam knows nothing. Nancy and I were careful to make sure he never knew anything, for circumstances like this.”

Detective Roberts smiled.

“It’s quite simple. I know most of the people in this town. I’ve lived here all my life. When we found the body, I did not recognise the woman and your family is the only new family in town.” He looked at a family picture that was on the side table. “I had no idea that this woman looked very similar to your mom.” Adam looked at the picture, fear gripping him.

“Do you think my parents are alive?” Detective Mathers got up and went to sit beside him.

“Right now we have no reason to believe they’re not. Don’t let your mind go there. It will just cause fear and is not helpful at all.” She paused, exchanging looks with her partner. “Unless you know of anyone who would want to harm your parents.” Adam thought for a moment before shaking his head.

“No, nobody that I can think of. However, if my parents were running from someone it would explain why we moved so much.” Detective Roberts frowned.

“Wait, you don’t know why your family moves so much?” Adam looked at him.

“No. They never gave me a straight answer. Whenever I asked they said it was because of work. I stopped believing that as I got older. Mechanics and waitresses don’t have to move that much.”

Avery’s phone rang and she glanced at it, frowning when she didn’t recognise the number. Maybe it was the police.

“Hello?” A raspy voice came from the other end.

“Tell Adam to stop searching for his parents before he gets hurt.” Avery put her phone on speaker, grabbing a paper and pencil off her desk, writing down the number.

“Who is this?” She wished she was with the cops now. Maybe they could still trace the phone with the number.

“Someone you and Adam should fear. Stop looking for Daniel and Nancy Ness, or else.” The phone clicked as the caller hung up. Avery grabbed her backpack, putting the paper in her bag before running downstairs to grab some other things, including her mom’s pepper spray.

“Dad, can we go now? I need to get to Adam’s place and fast!”

Would you fear that?

Man, now what’s going on? Who was that caller? How did they get Avery’s number? So many more questions and no more answers. What is going on with Daniel? Do you think he was digging a grave or looking for something? And where is Adam’s mom, Nancy? I guess we’ll have to wait until next week. Enjoy your weekend and I’ll catch you all on Monday.
