It’s been a while since I gave an update on my two cats. With what’s been going on these last few days, I thought an update on them would be a great idea. A lot has been happening in their lives and they are handling it like champs. I’m so proud of them. So, without further delay, here is my cat mom update.
Cat Mom Update – Teddy
Let’s start with this guy. Teddy is unsure around strangers. Now that I have an actual bed, he has a hiding spot and uses it a lot. There are some moments when I come in alone and he’s on the bed where he doesn’t panic and rush under the bed. Usually this is when I announce myself as soon as I enter the room. From the bed, you can’t see the door. On Thursday night I noticed his one eye was leaking a lot, and he was squinting with it. The last time this happened, he had an eye infection. I checked and sure enough, his eye was red. Friday, I called the vet I usually take them to and told them what was going on.
Now, both my boys hate travel and it stresses them out a lot. So, because he’d had this same infection before, I asked if I could just come pick up the medicine. The last time he had it I was told this would be something that he would be susceptible to all his life because of some sinus issues. However, that vet no longer works there. The receptionist said she would check with the vet and they would call me back. Unfortunately, they didn’t.
A Rough Weekend
Now, I have a friend who works there and I reached out to her. She apologised and said it was probably because they were understaffed. My vet office is closed on weekends, so I tried reaching out to another local veterinarian on Saturday but they didn’t have a time slot for a walk in with Teddy. They did suggest I go to Winnipeg, but I was not about to stress my cats out with a 45 minute drive to the city, get Teddy to see a vet he didn’t know, and then drive another 45 minutes back to Steinbach. So, we waited till today. Over the weekend, I did my best to keep his eye clean and let him rest, so that he could have it closed. And yes, he got all the snuggles he wanted.
On the Mend
This morning, first thing, I contacted the vet and emailed them some pictures of his eye. I was told to again wait for a call back to see if I had to bring him in, but they promised that I would hear back today. They kept that promise. A few hours later the vet called me and told me I could come pick up his medicine. I didn’t have to bring Teddy in. What a relief. Now, if you were wondering why I said cats (plural) before, I’ll explain. If I go to the vet, I have to bring both cats with so that they don’t fight afterwards, which is what they used to do. So, needless to say, I was glad I didn’t have to stress them both out. I went to pick up Teddy’s drops and we made it through the first dose of the day. Teddy shares my dislike of eye drops, but he handled it like a champ, and we played with the laser after as his reward.
Cat Mom Update – Marshall
Marshall has been settling into the hotel quite well. He doesn’t run as soon as he hears the door open, and it’s rare for him to be hiding under the bed. His hip dysplasia has been doing well, which is a relief. Now that I have a bed frame, he has to jump on and off the bed, and at first I was worried about how this would affect his hip. He’s been doing great though. My only “concern” is quite amusing. He has become addicted to TV. Every time I turn the TV on he can be spotted watching it, either from right on the floor in front of it, or sitting on the corner of my bed. And yes, he watches. His favourites right now are hockey and Hudson and Rex. It’s kind of funny.
That’s it
So, that is my cat mom update for now. Teddy is on the mend and Marshall is addicted to television. As I type this, Marshall is watching FBI. They have both been making good use of one of their scratching posts, which Teddy is using right now. Appetites are good, the laser is their favourite game and paper straws are their favourite toy. Teddy lets me know if I’m slacking on litter box care and both boys love snuggles, on their schedule of course. Slowly they are warming up to some of my regular visitors, and they are not jumping at every sound anymore. Maybe they will even lose some weight with all the jumping on and off the bed and laser playing they do. Anything is possible, if we try.
