So, yesterday my friends and I went to a candlelight show. It was an interesting experience and one I didn’t think I would ever want to try, but I’m glad I did. So, what is a candlelight show? I’ll explain what it was in this blog, as well as my own opinions and if I recommend it or not. Follow along as I tell you all about it.
Who ran it?
There is an organisation called Fever and they were the ones who put everything together. They got the musicians, the location, and planned everything out. The group also has their own app where you can purchase and store your tickets. The tickets were for a certain section, but there were no pre-selected seats. So, if you went with a group, you had better get there early or you could risk having to separate.
What was it?
The show itself was quite interesting. There were four musicians who sat on a small stage. They were surrounded by fake candles. No real candles were used as that could have been a safety issue. The rest of the room was dark, and they put on an orchestra styled concert for us. There are a few different shows that are playing and they have different themes, with some repeating themes. This way, if you missed it the first time, you have a chance to see it at another time. The instruments used were a cello, viola, and two violins.
The theme
I was really excited about the theme. It was a tribute to a musician named Hans Zimmer. For those of you who have no idea who that is, he has composed music for over 100 films. Some of these films are: The Lion King, Madagascar, Dune, and Pirates of the Caribbean, just to name a few. His music can be heard in time pieces, animation, war, horror, sci-fi and fantasy movies.
There was something absolutely magical about hearing it live like that. The show took place in the Planatarium at the Manitoba Museum. During the concert, there was a bit of a light show on the ceiling for us to enjoy as well. They partnered it really well with the song selections.
My experience
The show went for about an hour, which is great for those who are attending it in the middle of the week. You don’t have to worry about being out late. My experience was incredible. The mood, the music, the selections, and even the added bonus of using the Planatarium’s projector for the added light show was perfect. It was magical in a way. The only time you were allowed to use your phone for pictures or video was during the last song, and you had to make sure your flash was off. It was nice actually. You got to actually enjoy the experience instead of worrying about getting pictures and videos for social media.
My only complaint is that the guy who was sitting next to me decided he needed to take up a lot of space, even though he wasn’t a big guy. I felt like I was leaning so far towards my friend that I was practically in her lap. Other than that, I have no complaints. The selection of music that they played was excellent and they tried to touch on every genre of movie that he composed music for.
Would I recommend?
One hundred percent, yes. There are other tribute themes such as Coldplay, Queen, and Taylor Swift, and there will be another Hans Zimmer next month. It is worth the price. For the section we sat in, the tickets were $60 per seat. Go and check it out. Even if you think you’re not a fan of orchestra music. It was beautiful. You can head over to my personal socials to hear a bit as I will have posted a few snippets of the last song they played, when we were allowed to film. I’ll link those below. Go ahead and try something new this year.
