I did it guys. I’ve finished my second book of the year. Only forty eight more to go. This book was different – as in not my usual read. However, it was a special book because one of my best friends wrote it. This was a few years ago, but I finally got around to reading it. So, here is my review on Cursed Seed.
What is Cursed Seed?
Cursed Seed is the first book in a series called Society of Immortals. It was written by Geralyn Wichers. I asked her the other day how many are in the series and currently there are three books. As the series name implies, the story follows a few different immortals – telling their story. The first book focuses mainly on three characters, with a colourful array of supporting characters. The chapters go through a bit of a rotation, focusing on different main characters in the past and present.
What I Liked
Let’s start with the parts of the novel that I enjoyed. The characters, even though they are immortal, are very relatable. They each have something that they are struggling with, and you get to see their growth throughout the book. I really don’t want to give any spoilers, so I won’t go into detail about that. The supporting characters give you exactly what you need – comic relief, raw emotion, and a bad guy that is one of those love hate kind of bad guys. What’s neat with this book is you get to see a bit of his transition from good to bad. Or, is he just misunderstood? That’s for the reader to decide.
Where I Wasn’t a Fan
Because this story goes back and forth between past and present, there were moments where I struggled to keep up. For the most part it was clear if you were reading the past or present, as it stated so in the title. However, one of the characters did have some flashbacks in her chapter where it was present day, and going back and forth in the same chapter was tricky. It didn’t take long to figure out, but sometimes I had to reread something because I wasn’t sure what was happening. My only other “negative” is that I found it to be a slower read. However, that is personal preference because I tend to read more action styled novels.
Do I Recommend Cursed Seed?
Yes, but I will put a bit of a disclaimer with it. There is a part of the book that is quite gore heavy, and some people may not like that. There is some language that you may not approve of, but very little. Other than that, it is a very well written story with some intriguing ideas that make you really think. What would life be like as an immortal? Well, onto the second book in the series and book three of my reading challenge. Why does fifty seem so far away? But, I can reach my goal. After all, anything can happen if I try.
Thanks for reviewing, Steph!
My pleasure. Thanks for writing a great story.
