Answers – Chapter 10

Hello my friends. I hope you all had a great week. What are your plans for this weekend? Mine involve working, as per usual. I’m very excited for the plans I have coming up in a few months. However, that’s for a different blog. Today, we dive back in with Chapter 10, Answers. Let’s see what we get.

Detective Allan Roberts poured his coffee into his travel coffee mug, glancing at the time. He had overslept, which was a rare thing these days. Perhaps his colleagues were right and he was working too hard. When was the last time he had a vacation? The toaster popped up his bagel, and he quickly buttered it before running out the door. As he got into his car, his cell phone rang. As he answered it, he started his car.

“This is Detective Roberts.” His partner, Detective Odette Mathers chuckled on the other end of the line.

“Let me guess, you’re on your way. Finally got some sleep last night?” He smiled as he pulled out of the driveway, pointing his car in the direction of the police station.

“Yeah, I guess I did. Have we figured out who our victim is yet?” The frustrated sigh from the other detective told him they had not. “I’ll be there soon.”

Adam stared up at the ceiling. Sleep had eluded him all night as thoughts of his parents raced through his mind. He had tried to think of every conversation he had with them, or that he had overheard. The answers were there somewhere, he just had to find them. Hearing his phone ring, he quickly grabbed it, not even looking at the caller id.

“Hello?” Avery’s voice sounded on the other end, asking him what had happened. He was glad to hear her, but found himself wishing it was one of his parents instead.

“Adam?” Sitting up, Adam swung his legs out of bed, getting up and heading into the kitchen.

“I couldn’t identify the body. The woman looked similar to my mom, which is probably why they asked me to come in. The poor girl was beaten badly. Now I’m more worried. I tried calling my parents last night, but still no answer.”

“Do you mind if I come over? Perhaps we can put our heads together and figure something out?” Adam couldn’t help but smile. He was grateful for Avery’s friendship. In all the schools he had ever gone to, he had never met a friend like her.

“Sure, but maybe come in about an hour or so. I should probably take a shower and eat something.”

“Allan, I’ve got something.” Detective Roberts looked up from his screen as his partner walked over. She placed a file in front of him, pointing to the picture. “I took a look through missing persons in the state and came up with nothing. So, I looked further and found a potential match. Melissa Newman, age thirty, was reported missing by her fiance three months ago. According to his statement she left for work at eight in the morning but never came home. He had called the diner where she worked and they told him she never showed up for work. Police found her car abandoned on the outskirts of town, her purse and cellphone still inside. The wallet was filled with cash and untouched. Forensics found some hairs and a set of unidentified fingerprints, but that’s it.”

“She went missing three states away? How did she get here? Do the authorities have any suspects?” She shook her head. Standing up, he grabbed his coat. “Let’s go, I have a hunch, but I hope I’m wrong.” Odette grabbed her things as she passed her desk, falling into step with him.

“What is it?” He held the door open for her.

“We’re going to talk to Adam, the kid with the missing parents!”

More answers?

Okay, so we have a name for our dead woman, but still so many questions. Do the answers we seek come from Adam and his parents? I guess we will have to wait until next week. Until then, have a great weekend and I’ll see you on Monday.
