The Search – Chapter 8

Hey everyone. I hope you’re having a great Thanksgiving Weekend. Well, us Canadians anyway. My week has been hectic, as per usual. However, it’s time to put that all aside and dive into Chapter 8, The Search. So, without leaving you hanging much longer, enjoy.

The Search

Adam exited the hospital, pulling his cell phone out of his jeans pocket and dialling his father’s number for the third time that morning. The hospital had tried to reach him all night, with no luck. The police, after taking statements from Adam and Avery, had gone out to search for his dad. They came back with no luck.

“Hey, you’ve reached Daniel. Sorry I can’t come to the phone right now. Leave a message and I’ll get back to you.” Adam sighed and hung up. He was getting tired of leaving his parents voicemails that didn’t get answered. A white Toyota RAV4 pulled up next to him and the passenger window rolled down.

“Need a lift?” Adam smiled gratefully.

“Yeah, that would be great. Thanks Avery.”

“Call if you two need anything. And no funny business, you hear?” Avery rolled her eyes.

“Seriously dad?” Adam chuckled.

“Thanks again Mr. Burming.” Avery’s father, a man in his early fifties with dark hair, greying at the temples, and blue eyes smiled and waved before driving off. Adam used his key to unlock the door and he and Avery walked in. The house was exactly like he and his dad had left it the previous day. Going over to the table he looked at all the paper work. “Let’s see if we can find a coworker to contact. Someone should know where my dad is.” The two searched through the papers, finally finding a name and number. Adam dialled it.

“Yeah, who is this?” Not the most pleasant sounding man, but Adam pushed that out his mind.

“Hello. My name is Adam Ness. I’m looking for my dad, Daniel Ness. I found your phone number in his contacts. This is Phil, right?” The voice sighed.

“Yes. You’re looking for your dad, huh? Well, you ain’t the only one. He didn’t show up for work this morning. Any idea why not?” Adam frowned.

“The last I heard from him was a text message yesterday afternoon. He said he was running an errand for the garage.”

“Well that’s bullshit. We never sent him on an errand. He left early and said there was a family emergency. What the hell is going on?” Adam looked up at Avery, concern showing on his face.

“That’s what I would like to know. I’ll continue my search for him. Can you call me back at this number if you hear from him?” After promising to do so, Phil hung up and Adam collapsed into a chair. “He lied about the errand.”

Evening fell and Adam and Avery had searched the entire house, looking for any clues as to where his dad had gone. Avery’s father had called and said he was on his way to pick her up. Sighing with frustration, she blew a stray strand of hair out of her face.

“What the heck?” Those three words had come out multiple times during the search. Adam wished he had answers. A knock sounded at the door and he went to open it. The two police officers from the previous day were there.

“Hey Adam. Is your dad home?” He shook his head, stepping to the side to let them in. The cops sat down in the living room with the two teenagers, seemingly unsure of how to proceed.

“What is it?” The older officer sighed, his eyes looking past Adam.

“We need you to come to the morgue with us. Detective Roberts needs you to identify a body!”

Is the search over?

Oh man. Talk about intense. Whose body does he need to identify? What about the woman who escaped? Who did she escape from and who is she? It seems we are just left with more questions than answers. Enjoy your weekend, Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians, and I’ll see you next week.
