As we all know, the world is expensive and for a single person to afford to live on their own, they may have to consider working a second job. With that in mind, and with my roommate planning to move soon, I have to look at my finances and working schedule to see if I should get another job, or just keep going with what I’ve got.
Right now
So, as you may know, I currently work at a hotel as the assistant manager. Like any job it has its ups and downs, but for the most part I really do enjoy it. I love my coworkers and my boss is a gem. She’s got a very motherly side to her and she tries to help me out where she can. My coworkers are the type of people who try to help each other out, even outside of work. We are a tight-knit group and I’m incredibly blessed by them. Other than that, I have my blog and Arbonne. At the moment that I’m writing this blog, neither have made me a paycheck yet, but I know that these things take time. In the near future I will also be starting a YouTube channel. Again, it will take time before this becomes a source of income. Novel writing is also a long term investment.
What’s the concern
So, my roommate has asked me if I can afford to live on my own if she moves out. Things will be tight, but I do make enough to pay my rent and have a bit leftover. However, the concern comes in regard to my debt. Unfortunately we can’t pay off debt with smiles and kind words. So, this is where the question of getting a temporary second job comes in. To have that second job and use that paycheck to pay off my debt would be a huge help. But, I’m sure you have guessed the other dilemma. As the assistant manager at the hotel my hours are a bit all over the place and if someone is sick and no one else can take it, I’m one of the last people who needs to step up. This becomes harder if I have another job.
Possible solutions
So, I could try to find a job that only needs me for 1 to 2 shifts a week and schedule around that, hoping for the best, and hoping that I don’t go into burnout. I could go crazy with the blogs, push the Arbonne, and hope for the best, but again, that could lead to burnout. I could tell my roommate to not move, but that’s not fair to her, especially with her allergy to my cats, as well as some of her family members with the same allergy. I’m not quite sure what to make of this all, or what the solution will be. Perhaps I’ll just have to get really tight with my budget, cancel the internet at my place to reduce the bills and then just use the wifi at the hotel. I can sit in the office and work on my own thing between hotel shifts. I’m just going to have to trust that no matter what, I’ll be okay.
What’s next
I have been in touch with my landlord and he said he is willing to help me with possible solutions as well, so that’s awesome of him. I really do like living in this place, so the fact that he is willing to work with me is a huge help. And for those of you who are wondering why I don’t just get another roommate, I’m excited to live on my own. This is nothing against my current roommate. We will still be friends, and I understand why she wants to move. I have some plans for what I’ll do with this place if I stay.
Trusting god
In all of this, I will trust that God has a plan and that he is going to help me through this. This could mean more business at the hotel, which results in more hours for everyone. This honestly would be the best solution as I’m not the only one who is in need of hours. It could mean that I start getting paid for my blogs or for Arbonne sales. Maybe my YouTube channel will become popular quicker than anticipated and I’ll start getting paid there. Or, perhaps I’ll find the perfect second job to compliment the one I have. Who knows what will happen, but I do trust that I will be okay. Thank you for your support, and I’m excited for the future. It’s hard to advise you on job options, not knowing what your employer has in mind. The most obvious factor is the need for you to have time and flexibility to respond to the needs of your primary job.
With that in mind, your Arbonne option seems reasonable, at least if you can get satisfactory financial returns on your time and investment. If you do some handwork, the kind that does not require a great deal of space (crochet or knitting as compared to lap quilting) you could produce items for sale at craft shows or through on-line marketing. The competition is fairly keen, so you would have to find a product that appeals to customers, and one that others are not already doing, or offer features others don’t. Custom sewing or services like that require some significant outlay for equipment, and customers might have need or demand rush orders. I’m trying to “think out loud” about ways you could augment your present income.
Unfortunately, the sewing/crochet/knitting option is a no go for me. I haven’t touched a sewing machine since junior high when I had to take a class. The working from home option does seem the best, so blogging, Arbonne, YouTube, and in the hopefully near future, selling books. I know that each of these takes time to produce income, so I’m just trying to think of what to do with the time while I wait to start making money.
