The Kill Clause

I’m back with another book review. Well, audio book review as I could not find the physical book. And I looked. No, I didn’t look at ordering it online, but that’s because I’m trying to pay down my debt. But, enough of that for now. You want to hear about The Kill Clause and my thoughts on it. So, here is my book review.

The Kill Clause Summary

The Kill Clause is written by Gregg Hurwitz and follows Tim Rackley, a US Marshall. The story begins with him being informed of his daughter’s death. He and his wife are obviously devastated. The murderer is caught quickly, but the investigation is not done properly and he gets off on a technicality. Problems happen at work as well and Tim ends up quitting the Marshall Task Force he is on. He’s approached by a stranger offering him an opportunity. He gets asked to join a small group that looks over cases that were botched because of bad police work. They go over case files, testimonies and evidence and vote guilty or not guilty. If they decide someone is guilty, then Tim implements a plan to take them out. But everyone has their own agenda, in one way or another.

What I Liked

As those of you who have been following my book reviews know, I am a fan of Gregg Hurwitz’s work. He writes my favourite series, Orphan X. So, like that series, I love the way the story was written. The raw emotion, the way that certain relationships were affected by everything, was really well written. Everyone handles loss differently and this story certainly showed that.

What I Didn’t Like

Oddly enough, the book was quite predictable. I saw the ending coming a mile away. Where the predictability came from I still found the moments intense. But I don’t want to have a book all figured out part way through the book. There’s no joy in it. The book, while well written, was not my favourite of Gregg Hurwitz and I found it quite forgettable. Which is a problem when writing a book review…..days after finishing the book.

The Kill Clause Rating

Despite the predictability of the book, I still gave The Kill Clause a 4 star rating. I understand that The Kill Clause was written and published years before Orphan X, so I am reading his earlier writing. And good writers grow in their ability to tell stories as time goes on, which means that it would make sense that Orphan X is better. I am still quite happy with the story and there were really good aspects to the story. I won’t take that away from the author.

Keep Going

I currently have 5 books on my “currently reading” list. Which one will I finish next? Who knows. One is from the library, and is quite thick. I was on a waiting list for it, so I’m not sure if I can renew it. So I’m trying to finish that one first. Another I did have to return to the library, so I’ll have to get that one back again. The third I started reading but had to return to the library. However, I found the audio book on spotify, so I’m continuing it there. The 4th book is on pause as I hunt for the first book in the series to give me a bit of a better understanding of the one I’m reading. And lastly I have a book that is mine that I’m making my way through.

The Race is On

So, the race is on. I currently have 3 library books. They are due next week Wednesday. The book exchange is next week Thursday. I’m going on the assumption that the one book I’m reading I cannot renew because I had been on a waiting list for it. Which means, I need to finish it before Wednesday. And I do have two books that I’m ready to bring back to the book exchange because I didn’t do my research and they are NOT books I want to read. However, it would be nice to bring at least 1 more book so I don’t feel too guilty when I come home with five or more. This means I have a week and a few days to rush through my reading. But, anything can happen if I try. And I’m going to try my best. Wish me luck.
