The God of the Woods

I know. I didn’t update my journey. Well, I figured that I didn’t need to actually update every week, but just often enough to not forget about it. So, it will be either every week or every other. And that might change throughout the journey. But, you’re here for a book review. That’s why you clicked on this blog. So, let me give you my thoughts on The God of the Woods.

Summary of The God of the Woods

The God of the Woods is a thriller mystery written by Liz Moore. It goes back and forth with timelines as one family has two children go missing, at different points in time. Their first born, Bear, goes missing while out on a walk in the woods and is never found. Time passes and the couple has a second child, a girl. One summer she decides that she wants to go to the summer camp that is on the property and owned by her family. She attends for a few weeks and then one morning her cabin leader comes back to the cabin to find Barbara, the daughter of the wealthy family, is not in her bed. She asks the other cabin leader and a search begins for the missing girl. Lots of things, past and present, are brought up and we get tangled up in multiple lives.

What I Liked

So, I listened to this book on audiobook. I started reading the physical copy of the book, but most of it was through audiobook. This was a positive and negative in itself. First – positives. The story was well written. It was different in ways from others books I’ve read, but the style grew on me. Liz was also good at leaving you wondering who did it? Who was responsible for Barbara’s disappearance? How was it connected to Bear’s disappearance years ago? The mystery was well written.

Dislikes

This one is not on Liz, but all on me. Because it was an audiobook, I felt like I tuned out a lot and missed some things. Because Spotify has limited listening hours, I didn’t bother re-listening. Again, that was on me and should not be held against the book. But, what should, is how the book ended. It felt…flat. Like, it wasn’t an ending that I saw coming from a mile away, but part of it didn’t surprise me at all. To me, a good mystery should leave you blown away and this one was just….lack luster. It’s hard to describe without giving spoilers, so I’ll leave it at that.

Rating of The God of the Woods

Final thoughts and rating of The God of the Woods – I’m not sure how much of an honest opinion I can give, because of the audiobook experience. But, I gave the book 3 stars. I enjoyed most of the mystery, but like I said, the ending just fell flat for me. I’m not sure what I needed to make the ending better, but it was missing something. Its been a few days since I finished the book and most of it has already left my mind, so that tells you that I didn’t find this book that special. And before you ask, no it’s not because it’s an audiobook. I remember the Nightingale still, and that was an audiobook.

Good News

The good news is that I seem to be out of my reading slump. Although, I’m also reading 4 books at once. Well, it’s more like two books, but I really should chip away at the library books before they are due because I think I’ve renewed them the max amount of times. The other two books are mine and I don’t really have the pressure to read them quickly now. As long as I have some of my personal stash read before June 5th, which is when the next book exchange will be. I was just at one today, which is May 1st at the time of writing this blog. So, let’s see what other books I can get finished by then. I got a decent haul again too. Anything can happen.
