Dearly Devoted Dexter

This book was the first book I read in my 24 hour reading challenge. I have to admit, this is another series I can tell that I will enjoy. It was easy to breeze through in almost one sitting. But, enough spoilers. Let me tell you about Dearly Devoted Dexter.

Dearly Devoted Dexter Summary

Dearly Devoted Dexter is the second book of the Dexter series. We start the book with Dexter going after his next victim and being surprised to find out that his victim has a partner. Now he has a second person to go after. However, his “hobby” (his words) is put on hold when a detective who doesn’t like him starts following him and keeping him under surveillance. Dexter decides to dive into his disguise and be normal enough that the detective will get bored and stop following him. This means he starts spending a lot more time with his girlfriend and her two children. Then, while having lunch with his sister, she gets called to a crime scene. Curious as ever, Dexter comes along for the ride and finds himself in an unusual scene.

Not Your Regular Monster

The scene is horrifying to nearly everyone there. In the house Dexter finds a body that is only a torso and a head remaining. That’s not the most horrifying part. What makes this so terrible is the fact that the person is alive. Naturally, Dexter is intrigued and wonders just who could have the skills to dismember someone and keep them alive. And better yet, why? Things take another twist when the team is taken off the case by a federal organisation who says they are not allowed to tell anyone about what they saw. He does recruit Dexter’s sister, Deborah, to assist him and she eventually drags Dexter onto the case as well. When the agent goes missing Deborah and a reluctant Dexter are on the case and Dexter is forced to work with the detective who doesn’t like him to find this new monster.

What I Liked

Dexter. His character in this book was more quirky and funny. There were plenty of times where I had to put the book down because I was laughing so hard. He is a lovable monster, as he likes to think of himself. The story was also very intriguing. Not a regular serial killer, especially since he only actually killed one person. The others were like the first victim, or were rescued at some point during their dismemberment. It is gritty and the story was highly suspenseful. The way things wrapped up, and a plot twist that was thrown in, were other highlights of the book. All in all, a very good read.

Dislikes

Similar to the first book, some of the language was too much. I did find that it was mostly Deborah who was the culprit in this book and her language was the worst. If I think about it, she was probably the worst in the first book as well. I’ve also come to the conclusion that I don’t like Deborah’s character, especially the way that she treats Dexter. Other than that, not too many complaints on my end.

Dearly Devoted Dexter Rating

Overall I rated this book a 4 star. I enjoyed the story and absolutely love Dexter’s character. After this book I have decided that I don’t like Deborah’s character. Maybe she will change and grow on me, but right now I could do without her. Like I said, I am enjoying the series. I don’t think any of them will be 5 star worthy, but you never know. The plot twist that happened in this book does get me curious as to how that will play out in future books. However, I can’t share it without spoiling the book for anyone who wants to read it.

Still a Long Ways

Well, as you’ll know from my last blog, I still have a long way to go. Because I didn’t fully complete my reading challenge I’m still far behind on my reading goal. And then after DNFing a book, I honestly feel even further behind. Perhaps I’ll do some reading during my night shift tonight. We’ll see what happens. I still have a chance to make my goal. And we know that anything can happen if I try.
