Busy

Well, I enjoyed last weekend where I had my first weekend off. This weekend it was back to work and we had a really busy weekend. Due to this, I was unable to post a blog yesterday. Sorry about that. But being busy means I put in some extra hours.

Why it Was Busy

There were some baseball and softball tournaments in the area. Unfortunately, whoever plans these things schedules all of them to be on the same weekend. Which means all hotels in the area get overrun for one weekend. Why not space it out so we can be busy for a whole month instead of just two days? Anyway, sports teams keep us busy as they like to buy snacks, sit in the hot tub, use our games room and more. They also like to eat at the same time, for the most part. Which means breakfast is insane. This is usually when others are checking out, or everyone needs fresh towels or something else. So, we had to have two people on shift to handle it all. It was thrilling being this busy, but also exhausting.

All Hands on Deck

As you can imagine, when a weekend like this winds down there is a lot of work to be done. So, it’s all hands on deck. Everyone helps out wherever the help is needed on a busy weekend. For example, our maintenance guy helped make sure we didn’t run out of coffee. The owners came in and one of them helped strip rooms while the other worked hard on laundry and assisting with checkouts. Front desk agents help the housekeeping staff by bringing fresh bedding to the rooms for them. On a busy weekend, especially in a small hotel, there is no such thing as “that’s not my job”. We work as a team in all aspects.

I Wish we Were More Busy

In our city, because we are not a tourist hot spot, we don’t get lots of busy weekends like this one. We all depend on events, like sports tournaments, weddings, etc. to bring guests to the area. We would love it if we had more busy weekends. In fact, we all hope and pray for it to get even busier. We’re also trying to find new ways to get people to come to our hotel. We plan all kinds of things like themed weekends, markets, and special sales. And we are constantly trying to think of more things to do at the hotel to make it more interesting for our guests. We want our guests to have a unique experience, not just a hotel stay.

Getting More Hours

I know what you’re thinking. Don’t you work enough hours? Sometimes. Other times, I feel like I work more than I actually did. In fact, with me being on salary, if I have more hours than my salary hours, I can hold onto them, if that makes sense. My goal is to build enough saved hours that I can take a vacation and still get paid for it. I know it sounds confusing to some people, but it’s a perfect arrangement between my boss and I. And it helps make sure I have a consistent paycheck amount so that I can work towards paying off my debt. However, if I don’t work enough to meet salary hours, that means that I’ll owe my boss hours. So, I’m going to work my butt off to make sure that once my salary term is over, I do not owe any hours, but rather I have enough extra to take a vacation.

Planning for Extra Hours

So, how do I plan to make those extra hours? With some of those creative ideas. One idea that I had was to make a special corporate rate that would include two meals for company workers. We often get construction crews and other labour workers for companies at the hotel. Sometimes they have to leave for work before our breakfast shift arrives, so that means they don’t get breakfast in the morning. However, I had the idea that we could have pre-made meals ready for them in the morning to grab on their way to work. And when they return, instead of living off fast food the whole week, we would have a homemade dinner ready for them. I’ve mentioned it to some of the guys who have been here regularly and they are pumped and want us to run the idea past their higher ups. If that’s a go, I’ll be the one in charge of the meals, which means plenty of hours for me.

Until Next Time

Well, that’s all I have for this blog. Unfortunately, I’ve been too busy to do too much reading, so I’m not sure when the next book review will come out. Most likely not tomorrow. But, I’ll aim for Wednesday and see what happens. I suppose I could watch less Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles but where’s the fun in that? You might say I’m a little bit obsessed with the turtle brothers at the moment. But, I’ll try and do more reading instead. And for those of you wondering if Story Saturday is done for good – I’m still not entirely sure. Honestly, I have not spent too much time thinking about it. So, we will see what happens. Right now, I just want a nap. What would you guys want? More stories, or just blogs? Let me know because anything can happen, if you give me feedback.
