Happy Canada Day! I can say that my weekend has been great. A few tweaks due to weather, but still a great weekend. But, we’re not talking about that today. We are talking about the book I finished last week. Out of the Dark was just as intense as I hoped it would be. Here’s my review.
Out of the Dark Summary
Out of the Dark is the 4th book in the Orphan X series by Gregg Hurwitz. After the events that took place in the 3rd book, Hellbent, Evan is ready to take on his next mission. Kill the President of the United States! I know it sounds intense and you’re probably wondering, when did he become a bad guy? He didn’t, the President was the bad guy! As Evan plans, messes with the President’s head, and gets a call from someone who needs his help as The Nowhere Man, things heat up quickly. He is reunited with some former characters, an enemy becomes an ally and an enemy from his past appears – one he didn’t know he had.
Positives
Where do I begin? I’m in love with this series. The pace was good, the character growth is amazing, the characters are interesting. It has everything you could ever want. Action scenes, relational scenes, even a touch of romance for those who like that stuff. This book has the right amount of intensity and suspense. It wrenches at your heart one moment and has you cheering on Evan as he fights bad guys the next. The one thing I really appreciate about Evan – he doesn’t kill anyone who doesn’t have it coming. There is a scene where he is confronted by police, who are just doing their job. He beats them up just enough to escape – after giving them the option to walk away of course. He is a gentleman after all.
Negatives
Honestly, I can only think of one negative. There was a point in the book where we get introduced to another character’s point of view and it just felt like too many for me. We always have Evan’s story, and usually an enemy’s perspective. This one we had Evan, the President, the lead Secret Service agent on the case, the victim who needs the Nowhere Man’s help, and the enemy from Evan’s past. Don’t get me wrong, Gregg balanced the points of view perfectly, but it got to a point where I was introduced to another point of view and thought it was unnecessary. That’s the only negative I can think of. I guess the sex scene was not something I wanted to read either, but Gregg thankfully doesn’t see a need to go into huge detail with those, so they are easy to gloss over.
Out of the Dark Rating
I gave Out of the Dark a 4.5 rating. It wasn’t quite 5 stars, but it was still an amazing read. And this might just be me, but I loved the different ways that Evan tackled problems. Heck, the way he eliminates some of the people trying to kill him is creative. I think that the way he talks to some of his enemies is interesting. There was one scene where he and his enemy are actually having a casual conversation before Evan finishes him off. It’s kind of crazy. The end of Out of the Dark seemed to wrap up one story line nicely so I’m very interested to see what book 5 has in store for me.
What’s Next
After finishing Out of the Dark I have decided to take a small break. I want to finish the Red Rising Trilogy first. As I write this I’m about to start chapter 4 of the 3rd instalment. I have all kinds of expectations for this book. After that, I can focus on the Orphan X series. However, because I know myself well, I’ll probably start up another series as well because apparently I can’t just read one series at a time. I don’t think I’m ready to go back to Jaime Jo Wright’s books, but we will see what happens the next time I make it to the library. For those who want to know, Out of the Dark was the 16th book in my reading challenge. My goal for the year is 50. Still pretty far behind. Today’s a rainy day, so it’s perfect for sitting and reading a book. I also need to tackle some cleaning and I have supper plans. But, I know I can get some reading done today. After all, anything can happen if I try.
